    North Carolina has a range of geography which makes many different types of vacations possible. The state offers everything from mountains to beaches, cities to wilderness, with activities well suited to couples, families, the old and the young.

    Seasons – When to Come

    From spring’s flowers to fall’s bugling elk to winter’s snow-covered forests, you’ll find beauty and wonder in Rocky Mountain National Park all year long!

    Many prefer the mountains during the summer months, where highs are as much as 20 degrees cooler.

    Whether you’re looking to plan a vacation filled with adventure or relaxation, or a bit of both, it should be easy to do in the Smoky Mountains of North Carolina.

    Weather is a key factor that will affect your trip to the North Carolina mountains in any season.

    Coldest Months: December, January and February are traditionally the coldest months in North Carolina.
    Hottest Months: July and August are usually the hottest months of the year. But the temperatures in the mountains can be close to 20 degrees colder than the beaches.
    Nicest Months: April, May, June, September and October are all nice. If you like water activities, go sometime after July. Beware of tropical storms in late summer months but they are mainly not an issue in higher elevations.

    Seasonal Events

    Monarch Butterflies: The mountains are also a stopping point for monarch butterflies during September. The best chance for butterfly viewing is in the mountains near Asheville and around Wagon Road Gap on the Blue Ridge Parkway.

    The butterflies cluster here as part of their annual migration to South America. Those who prefer spring blooms should time their visit for March and April, where azaleas of all color, along with pink-and-white dogwoods litter the landscape.

    Christmas at Biltmore: The biggest event of the holiday season. See America’s largest home decked out in festive finery. Candlelight Evenings are especially magical.

    Beech Mountain Ski Resort: As the highest ski and snowboard area in the eastern U.S., they offer 15 slopes on 95 acres of skiable area. There are plenty of runs for every skill level, and with a vertical drop of 830 feet and more than 80 inches of annual snowfall.

    What Time is Best For You?

    In the mountains peak seasons for visitors are June through October, with equally busier times taking place during April, May and November.

    Depending on your outdoor hobbies and interests your favorite time to visit North Carolina might not be in peak season. If you enjoy summer outdoor activities like, rider the tail of the dragon, fishing, hiking or camping you might prefer early or late summer.
